Best Desserts That Indonesia Can Offer

BetaHealthy - It would be remiss to discuss Indonesian food and leave out the amazingness that is Indonesian desserts. There is some extremely delicious desserts out there and here is my compilation of the best Indonesian desserts that you should try. Whether you want to make them or taste them, I think they should be part of your introduction to Indonesian food. No meal should be considered completed without at least trying out the desserts that accompany the food. And depending on your sweet tooth, you should be able to find an Indonesian dessert that suits your tastes well. Beritalogi

Klepon:
These are pretty much sweet coconut rice balls. There are two varieties. You can either get one with a rice flour base or a black sticky rice base. There is an exploding sensation when you bite into a ball as the brown sugar melts into your mouth. You can usually find them at an Indonesian market. So delicious.

Es Teller:
This dessert is made from shredded coconut, avocado, and jack-fruit that is topped with shaved ice. It’s really an ice-based dessert, but nothing like ice cream. Avocado may not be what you are familiar with in a dessert, but it helps mellow out the jack-fruit.

Cendol:

This one is not limited to just Indonesia. Cendol can be found in several parts of Asia and is especially popular in Malaysia. It is a green jelly that is put in coconut milk and then sucked up through a straw. It’s easy to find from stands and food courts because it is so easy to carry around.

Pisang Goreng:

Pretty much banana fritters, Pisang Goreng is made from ripe bananas of many different varieties. The flavor varies a lot depending on the kind of bananas and the type of flour that is used to make them.

Kolak:

A mixture of sweet potatoes, bananas, pumpkins, and cassava, Kolak is stewed in coconut milk with palm sugar. It is all over during Ramadhan with an array of different ingredients, all very tasty and delicious.

Martabak Manis:

Pretty much a sweet pancake, Martabak Manis are sweet and melt in your mouth. Also easy to make if that is something that you would like to try out.

Klappertaart:

A Dutch-influenced dessert, Klappertaart is an Indonesian cake made from coconuts. It has flour sugar, milk, butter, coconut juice, and bits of coconut.

Cenil:

Cenil is a tapioca dessert that is consumed either as a snack or after dinner in the evening, but people typically won’t restrict it to a certain time of day. The tapioca is mixed with grated coconut and formed into a roll.

Winko Babat:

Considering the prevalence of coconut in Indonesian cuisine, we really need to include coconut cake in this list. It has an amazing taste and the coconut really pops. They mix it with vanilla to enhance the flavors. It is a very widely loved dessert and not really limited to one region in Indonesia.

Nastar

Nastar is Indonesian cookies that is topped with pineapplejam. This is a great idea to serve when you have guests coming on since it doesn’t require much in the way to eat. It is a great snack for any time of day.

I think desserts in every culture deserve a level of respect. I know that desserts get a bad reputation based on what they can do to your waist line, but really they are some of the most enjoyable things in the world. What dessert is made to be healthy? Desserts are made to be a treat. A food that you can enjoy once in a while. As long as you are not just eating dessert for three meals a day, I don’t see any issue in enjoying them. Though three meals a day does sound delicious.

I would like to think of myself as a bit of a foodie. I enjoy food. I don’t shy away from trying new things and spreading my wings. I am not going to stop myself from eating something amazing because it may be high in sodium or calories. Like all good things in life, you need to pace yourself and eat everything in moderation.
