If you want to go beyond just trying out Indonesian food in restaurants and want to attempt to make them at home, it is not impossible. Even if your kitchen skills may not be the most professional, there should be an Indonesian recipe out there that you can do. Here is a list of some easy Indonesian recipes that you can make yourself.

BakmieGoreng

This variation is made with chicken. It’s an Indonesian stir fry that includes the Indonesian noodles.

Time: 30 minutes start to finish

Servings: 4

Ingredients:

2 chicken breasts, diced

2 eggs

2 tbsp water

Dash of turmeric powder

5 tsp oil

12 oz fresh egg noodles

2 cups stir fry vegetables, including broccoli, peas, carrots, or whatever you like

3 green onions, sliced

2 chopped garlic cloves

2 tbsp spicy curry paste

3 tbsp chicken stock

3 tbsp Soy Sauce

¼ cup fried shallots, as garnish

Sliced chili and lime wedges, as garnish

Directions:

  • Soak the egg noodles in water
  • Whisk the eggs, water and turmeric powder
  • Heat 1 tsp oil on medium heat and add egg mixture to make a thin omelet, roll, set aside.
  • Heat 2 tsp oil and brown chicken set aside
  • Sautégreen onions, garlic and curry paste in 2 tsp oil until fragrant. Add vegetables and stir fry for 2-3 minutes, add chicken, toss.
  • Make a well in the middle of mixture and stir in stock and soy sauce.
  • Add noodles and toss for 3 minutes. Add sliced omelet and garnishes before serving.
  • Indonesian Pork Satay

This is an Asian staple and the smell alone seriously makes me hungry.

Time: Total time takes about 6 hours for marinade, 30 minutes to cook

    Servings: 4

    Ingredients:

    2 cloves of garlic

½ cup of green onions, chopped,

1 tbsp chopped ginger (powder can work to substitute)

    1 cup roasted peanuts

    2 tbsp lemon juice

    2 tbsp honey

    ½ soy sauce

2 tsp of coriander seeds, crushed

1 tsp of red pepper flakes

    ½ cup of chicken broth

    ½ cup of melted butter

    • 1-1½ lbs of pork tenderloin, cubed

    Skewers

    Directions:

  • In a food processor, process garlic, green onions, ginger, peanuts, lemon juice, honey, soy sauce, coriander, and red pepper flakes. Puree until almost smooth. Pour in broth and butter, and mix again.
  • Place pork cubes in a large Ziploc bag, and pour mixture over meat. Marinate in the refrigerator for about 6 hours, or overnight to really enhance the flavor.
  • Preheat grill for medium heat. Remove pork cubes from bag, and thread onto skewers. In a small saucepan, boil the marinade for 5 minutes. Reserve a small amount of the marinade for basting, and set the remainder aside to serve as a dipping sauce.
  • Lightly oil preheated grill. Grill for 10 to 15 minutes, or until well browned, turning and brushing frequently with cooked marinade. Serve with dipping sauce.
  • Indonesian Soy Sauce

I know it’s easy to go out and buy soy sauce, but Indonesian soy sauce is more sweet than salty. Here is just a quick recipe to make your own Indonesian soy sauce to top on any Asian dish. I wouldn’t restrict it to just Indonesian food because it’s tasty.

    Time: 2.5 hours total

    Servings: 30

    Ingredients:

2 ½ cups of granulated sugar

    3 cups of soy sauce

    ½ cup of water

½ anise pod if available, but ground will work too

    2 tbsp of curry

    1 tbsp ground ginger

    4 cloves of minced garlic

    Directions:

  • Brown the sugar first in a saucepan over low heat. It’s easy to burn sugar so watch out. Once it is light brown, add in the soy sauce. Slowly add in the remaining ingredients. Increase to medium heat and bring to a boil, stirring frequently. Once the sugar is dissolved, which will take about 15 minutes, remove the sauce from the burner. Cool the sauce and store it in your refrigerator.

I would like to think of myself as a bit of a foodie. I enjoy food. I don’t shy away from trying new things and spreading my wings. I am not going to stop myself from eating something amazing because it may be high in sodium or calories. Like all good things in life, you need to pace yourself and eat everything in moderation.
